Temple Theft Accused Escapes From Coimbatore Hospital, Nabbed
COIMBATORE: A 24-year-old man who escaped from police custody in Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) was arrested by the city police on Wednesday. The accused, identified as S Jamesha, is a resident of GM Nagar near South Ukkadam. He was arrested on Tuesday by the Podanur police in connection to a theft at a temple near Kanjikonampalayam last year. The accused had stolen money and valuables worth thousands of rupees, according to police officials.
He was taken to CMCH around 10pm for a medical check-up before being produced at the judicial magistrate. However, he escaped from the hospital, said officials.
Subsequently, a case under Section 224 (escapes from police custody) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was filed at the Race Course police station and the officials began searching for him.
On Wednesday, the police arrested the accused, who was roaming near the railway junction in an attempt to flee the city.
He was later produced before the judicial magistrate and was lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison.
In a similar incident, a 30-year-old murder accused who was undergoing treatment at CMCH for psychiatric issues escaped from the hospital premises on August 10 and was arrested by police two days later.
