Tourism Minister and MLA of Kharar Anmol Gagan Mann met the rescued students at Rakoli relief camp and gave them courage and assured them of safe return to their homes.

The National Disaster Response Team (NDRF) rescued 400 students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya at Rakoli village which was surrounded by the flooded Kurali Nadi Sunday in Kharar area after the heavy rainfall.

The students were later brought to the relief centre set up at the village.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (G) Paramdeep Singh and Kharar Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Ravinder Singh said that after getting a call from the school principal for help, the matter was brought to the notice of Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain, who immediately asked to rope in NDRF for rescue.

Later, with the help of NDRF, villagers and revenue department employees, all these students were taken out safely. The students, who mostly belong to Kharar and Derabassi, were taken to their homes by buses.

Officials said that due to the rise of water in the Patiala Ki Rao rivulet in the area, its flow was diverted from the Malakpur bridge to save the surrounding 50 villages from the damage.

DC Jain said that if this was not done in time, then the storm water of this river would have caused destruction on a large scale in 50 villages up to Rajpura. She ordered immediate strengthening of rivulet’s weak banks with sandbags.

Apart from this, 14 members of two families of Kurali, who were stuck in the water of Siswan, were taken out of the water with the help of NDRF and brought to a safe place.

She said that two houses in ward no. 21 and 3 in Kharar collapsed, but the people living in them were safely taken out. Apart from this, with the help of the fire brigade, 82 people trapped on the roofs were brought down safely while the problem caused by rising water in Marina Heights, Mata Gujri, Pacific Enclave areas of the city was also resolved.
