Mumbai Trans Harbour Link Reveals Traffic Rules Ahead of Grand Opening

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), affectionately named Atal Setu in honor of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, is set to be inaugurated on January 12 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to the Chief Minister’s Office. The Mumbai police have outlined crucial traffic regulations for the sea bridge, including a maximum speed limit of 100 kmph for four-wheelers. However, motorbikes, autorickshaws, and tractors are prohibited from accessing the bridge.

Vehicles such as cars, taxis, light motor vehicles, minibuses, and two-axle buses are subjected to the 100 kmph speed limit, with a restriction to 40 kmph during the ascent and descent of the bridge, as stated by an official. The Mumbai police’s imposition of speed limits aims to mitigate potential dangers, obstructions, and inconvenience to the public on India’s longest sea bridge.

Multi-axle heavy vehicles, trucks, and buses heading towards Mumbai will not be allowed on the Eastern Freeway. Instead, they are directed to use the Mumbai Port-Sewri Exit (Exit 1C) and take the MBPT Road near ‘Gadi Adda’ for further movement. Additionally, there will be a strict prohibition on the entry of motorcycles, mopeds, three-wheelers, autos, tractors, animal-drawn vehicles, and slow-moving vehicles on the MTHL.

The MTHL, boasting a 6-lane sea link with 16.50 kilometers over the sea and 5.5 kilometers on land, is a significant infrastructure project with an estimated cost of ₹18,000 crore. Once operational, it promises to drastically reduce travel time between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai to just 20 minutes, a journey that currently takes around 2 hours.
